Description
The Alternative Education and Work Center (AEWC) is the district's dropout
student recovery program authorized through Senate Bill 65, the Dropout
Prevention and Recovery Act of 1985. The Division of Adult and Career
Education administers the program at locations throughout the district.
Objective
To provide or facilitate educational options leading to achievement of
a high school diploma, GED, High School Proficiency Certificate, entry
into a vocational training program, job placement or community college
placement.
Target
Population
High risk out-of-school youth in grades 9-12 who have experienced barriers
to their educational and/or vocational success.
Eligibility
Requirements
Any youth who has not attended school for 45 days or more.
Locations
Served
Alternative Education and Work Centers operate at selected Community Adult
Schools and at the Adult Division's employment preparation centers located
throughout the District.
Applications
Procedure
An enrollment conference may be scheduled by calling the Outreach Consultant
at any Alternative Education and Work Center.

Information
The centers operate on a client-centered basis, with educational and vocational
training schedules individualized in a Master Agreement and Student Education
Plan. This plan reflects the student's stated goals and objectives, and
includes a time line for completion of coursework.
Independent study, based on the Division's competency based curriculum,
provides flexible scheduling and allows the student to work while earning
a high school diploma or its equivalent.
